Winter wages boost transportation career opportunities

Winter doesn’t seem to be ending soon as snowy conditions persist. This stubborn weather is met by those working as highway maintenance workers (Standard Occupational Classification of 47-4051). While snow removal is just part of their overall job description, it is certainly one that helps this career prosper in Idaho.

In 2022, Idaho highway maintenance workers earned a median wage of $21.95 per hour  — more than the national average of $21.60. These workers saw an 11.2% increase in wages from 2021 to 2022. Not only have wages increased, but the number of highway maintenance workers has also increased in Idaho by over 9% from 2021 to 2022. The largest increase was seen in the Coeur d’Alene area which grew by approximately 62.5%. These increases in wages and employment give a bright outlook to this sometimes cold, snowy career.
