“If you have nothing to hide, why wouldn’t you give an employer access?” This argument is wrong on many levels. First, many things might be inferred from your social media presence that are in no way wrong, but they are still illegal for an employer to ask in an interview.
For instance, political activity. If you are discreet and professional about your political activity at work, but you share it on facebook there is NOTHING wrong with that. However, it is illegal for an employer to ask about these details at any time or make them a condition of employment.
Do NOT work for an employer that thinks they have a right to this information. DO be thoughtful about your online presence, but do NOT become a slave to the hiring class. Accepting a job does not give an employer a right to know about every aspect of your life.
