Serve Idaho Announces $50,000 in Funding for Planning Grant

Idaho nonprofit, educational, community and faith-based organizations, Indian tribes and local governments are eligible to apply for federal funding through Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism. The $50,000 will be awarded to one organization to fund a planning grant on the feasibility of operating an AmeriCorps program.

Interested organizations have until Sept. 17 to submit an application.

A notice of intent to apply for a grant must be filed by 4:30 p.m. MDT Sept. 8. The intent to apply can be found at serveidaho.gov/grantsFunding. A mandatory technical assistance call will be held Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. MDT.

Idaho Receives More than $1.1 Million for AmeriCorps Programs

Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism has received a $1,164,578 grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to fund Idaho AmeriCorps programs in 2018-2019. The grants will support the service of 155 AmeriCorps members statewide. AmeriCorps members give a year of intensive service on a full-time or part-time basis.

Workforce Development Training Funds Makes a Difference in the Lives of Those at Idaho Youth ChalleNGe Academy

A year ago the Idaho Youth ChalleNGe Academy in Pierce wanted to enhance its technical training and career readiness programs but lacked the funding to do so. The $25,000 Workforce Development Training Fund micro-grant it received from the Idaho Department of Labor has helped make these plans a reality for the one year duration of the grant.

A dozen or so local organizations have also jumped in and donated their time, materials and expertise to help the academy improve the training offered to the at-risk teens who attend the academy from throughout the state. In-kind donations from partnering organizations amounted to more than $36,000 of goods and services. Local organizations have donated supplies such as scrap metal and building supplies used in the metal fabrication and construction courses as well as donating their time which includes instruction hours or general job skills training like mock-interviews.

Paylocity Receives $1.2 Million to Train New Employees

Paylocity Corporation (NASDAQ: PCTY) has contracted with the Idaho Department of Labor to use $1.2 million in Idaho Workforce Development Training Funds to equip its new employees with the skills necessary to operate its new Idaho facility.

The positions will pay an average hourly wage of $21 plus employer-assisted medical benefits.

Grow Green Grant Helps Students Learn New Skills

Many of the highest-paying jobs require advanced skills in science, technology, engineering and math. To prepare students for careers in these fields, high schools, colleges and universities across Idaho tapped into a U.S. Department of Labor Grow Green grant managed by the Idaho Department of Labor.

The schools were awarded $4.6 million between February 2010 and June 2013 for programs such as wind energy, diesel engine technology, construction and pre-engineering. Nearly 1,800 students were involved in these programs, learning new skills because of the grants.

How Will You Pay For College?

Most college graduates earn twice as much in their lifetime as high school graduates. And while college or training can be expensive, there are programs designed to help you cover the cost.

February is Financial Aid Awareness month – a perfect time to get your financial information together. If you are applying for FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid), you can watch a video which will take you through the 7 steps to filling out the form — from log-in to submitting and confirmation. The video also will show you what documents you need to have handy to apply (such as federal income tax returns and bank statements).

You can use this calendar to see if there is a Financial Aid night in your area.

Looking for scholarship options? There are thousands of awards out there – from those for Idaho residents to scholarships for your area of study (such as nursing). Scholarships are organized by category or title on the Idaho Career Information System website to make it easier for you to find what you want.

Many schools offer work-study programs and state and federal grants are often available based on need.

Take the time to check out all the options available to you.

Idaho NonProfits, Colleges, Universities Encouraged to Apply for AmeriCorps Grants

Nonprofit organizations, colleges, universities, local governments and others have until Nov. 14 to formally notify Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, of their intention to apply for funding for the 2013-1014 fiscal year.

Grant awards range from $133,000 to $1.3 million and are used to fund individual service in programs that meet community needs in disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures and veteran’s services.

Through these grants, scores of AmeriCorps members will provide assistance to communities throughout the state in return for a modest living stipend and an education award that can be used to pay for college or to pay back qualified student loans.

A full time AmeriCorps volunteer receives a $12,100 living stipend and an education award of $5,550, including healthcare and childcare support.
