Idaho’s evolving movie theater industry

With the recent conclusion of Hollywood’s July blockbuster season, many families flocked to the big screen to witness this year’s latest releases. But summer 2020 showed a different picture. The pandemic forced the closure of movie theaters for an extended period due to lockdowns and social distancing measures.

During this time, movie theaters saw a national drop in attendance. Today, theaters are still struggling to rise back to pre-pandemic levels. National movie theater attendance in January 2024 was still 33% lower than in 2019 [1].

Region

  • Labor demand in northern Idaho remained stable in July 2024, with a total of 2,043 unique job postings in the region – an uptick from 1,889 in June. The unemployment rate rose slightly in July from 4.6% to 4.8%, increasing by a full percentage point from July 2023. Overall, total employment has decreased slightly over the last year.

Idaho Department of Labor researcher will discuss findings about airport worker fatalities, Sept. 10

Following a nationwide trend, Idaho has been experiencing a rise in accidents related to airports from 2018-2023. These accidents involved airport and associated airline employees, such as pilots, tarmac workers and baggage claim workers.

Most of Idaho’s airport-related accidents were in 2022, according to research findings from the Idaho Department of Labor, the National Transportation and Safety Board and the Idaho Industrial Commission’s information on workers’ compensation with OSHA’s data also potentially supporting this finding.
