Boise resident Robert Kerns knew he wanted to segue his career to working in the construction industry. It was just a matter of how.

Soon, he discovered the ICONIC program offered by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to help him reach his career goals. This five-week unpaid free training gives Idahoans an opportunity to gain a certification in heavy equipment operation and gives participants the necessary skills employers are looking for when they fill positions.

Most graduates who participate in the program may go on to obtain their commercial driver’s license to operate heavy vehicles.

“This five-week program is the most valuable education I’ve ever had,” Kerns said. “I have a lot more confidence now applying for jobs in the construction industry.”

Kerns said the instructors combine in-classroom education with hands-on experience using simulators and then working with real life equipment to practice. Speakers also came into the classroom to talk about their experiences in industry.

Kerns, who currently works as a flagger for AWP Traffic Services, is exploring career options with ITD and other companies. The skills and training he received through the ICONIC program, like being able to operate an excavator machine, give him important experience to offer prospective employers.

“There are a lot of jobs that I qualify for now, that I would not have gotten before. This program makes you way more valuable in the job market and being able to earn more money in industry,” Kerns said.

Depending on the occupation, annual average wages in construction can range from $44,000 to $58,000 statewide, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Kerns recommends residents who are intrigued and interested in the program, to just go for it and apply. He said this program gives Idahoans an opportunity to provide great service to the community.

“The five-week training is so worth it. Even if you aren’t going into the construction industry right away — do it. It is so valuable,” Kerns said.

Idaho residents are encouraged to apply for ICONIC’s upcoming training. The training takes place in Boise, April 7 – May 9. Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license, be at least 18 years old and pass a workplace drug screen.
