Tuesday webinar will discuss the contributions small businesses make in Idaho’s labor force

Idaho Department of Labor Economist Lisa Grigg will highlight data from industries representing the state’s smaller businesses at a free webinar Tuesday, Oct. 8. These businesses maintain one to four employees and account for over 60% of statewide employer accounts.

The presentation takes place from 11 a.m. to noon MDT over Zoom.

Grigg will also explore recent growth patterns of these businesses compared with larger establishments, the strengths and risks of being a smaller business and the contribution they make to Idaho’s labor market.

Twenty employers look for qualified candidates at hiring event, Oct. 8

Employers in the health care, finance, retail, construction and other industries are looking to hire Idahoans at a Boise hiring event, Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The event will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in the conference room of Building 6 at the State of Idaho Chinden Campus. The address is 11351 W. Chinden Blvd.

“Attending this event gives job seekers the chance to connect with diverse employers, explore career options and gain insight into what skills companies are seeking,” Workforce Consultant Joe Goitiandia said. “It’s an opportunity to discover new paths and make valuable connections in today’s competitive job market.”

  • Labor demand in northern Idaho remained stable in August 2024, with a total of 1,923 unique job postings in the region – a slight decline from 2,043 in July. The unemployment rate rose slightly in August from 4.8% to 4.9%, increasing by 0.8% from August of last year. Overall, total employment has increased slightly over the last year.

Idaho Department of Labor Council mobile location moves to 110 Moser Ave.

The department’s Council mobile location has moved to 110 Moser Ave.

The office is open to customers Thursdays, from 9:30 am. to 12:30 p.m. The location is shared with WICAP.

Customers will get the same assistance with resume writing, job applications, interview preparation, job training opportunities, community resources and filing for unemployment insurance benefits that was available at the previous location.

Idaho employee turnover rates decline with economic diversification

Compared to three decades ago, employee turnover rates among Idaho private companies have declined in 11 of the 19 industry sectors, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Quarterly Workforce Indicators. This decline is a sign of added job stability created by Idaho’s expanding industries.

Generally, employee turnover rates are defined as the percentage of a company’s or industry’s annual workforce changes. The change occurs when there is a new hire or a separation, where the separation can be caused by three occurrences: a quit, a discharge or a death. Continue reading →

Idaho’s August unemployment rate remains at 3.5%

Idaho’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.5% in August, unchanged from July.

The state’s labor force increased by 3,851 people (0.4%) to 985,722 while the labor force participation rate — the percentage of people 16 years of age or older who are either employed or looking for work — increased from 62.9% to 63.1% between July and August.

Total employment increased by 2,983 (0.3%) to 950,781 as unemployment increased by 868 (2.5%) to 34,941.

Free hamburgers and job opportunities available at Caldwell’s hiring event, Sept. 26

The event is from 3 to 6 p.m. at the department’s Caldwell office, located at 4514 Thomas Jefferson St.

The Trade Adjustment Assistance program changed this Idahoan’s life

Bonners Ferry resident, Josh Florea, didn’t know what his future held when he was laid off from his job in the fall of 2009.

But with a mix of grit and perseverance, along with assistance from the Idaho Department of Labor, he made his dream come true.

Florea attended North Idaho College for two years starting in the spring of 2010. In 2012, after completing classes at North Idaho College and with the help of the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program, he got a call from the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office offering him employment.

Florea is now a lead detention deputy and combatives instructor for Bonner County. He has been a deputy ever since he left North Idaho College.

“I really enjoy what I do. I put my heart and soul into what I do every day,” Florea said. “I learned there are still things you can accomplish even after 12 years.” Continue reading →

Idaho ranked 4th nationally in family income growth

Median family income

Idaho experienced statistically significant changes in its median family income from 2022, rising by 2.7%. The state ranked 4th in growth nationally, according to the latest American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Montana was the only other western state that ranked in the top 10.
