Jobs available at career fair in Caldwell, March 6

A career fair for job seekers interested in working in the government sector, will be held Thursday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Idaho Department of Labor Caldwell office, 4514 Thomas Jefferson St.

Employers planning to attend include the State of Idaho, the Transportation Security Administration, the Idaho Veterans Care Facility, Ada County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Army and more.

A variety of open positions will be available including law enforcement, military and retirement care.

Idaho sees increase in workplace fatalities in 2023

Idaho had 48 workplace fatalities in 2023 — a 23% increase from 2022 and the highest number of deaths in a single year in the past 10 years — according to the most recent Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) report on 2023 data.

The annual CFOI report documents fatal on-the-job injuries for workers — it does not include illnesses or preexisting conditions that caused a worker to die without an injury, such as COVID or a heart attack. Continue reading →

Hands-on training in heavy equipment operation available in Boise

Free training is available for Idahoans wanting to pursue a career in heavy equipment operation.

The Idaho Career Opportunities – Next in Construction (ICONIC) program is a path to a rewarding career in highway construction. Most graduates who participate in the program may go on to obtain their commercial driver’s license to operate heavy vehicles.

The five-week intensive course involves a mix of classroom and hands-on learning. The next training session takes place in Boise from April 7 to May 9.

Port of Lewiston 50th anniversary to be highlighted in webinar, Feb. 18

Topics will include historical key milestones for the port, multi-modal transportation options and how the port attracts businesses to create regional job opportunities.

Idaho’s winter tourism continues to flourish amid affordable housing and wage lag

Winter tourism benefits are for people who regularly visit Idaho’s winter playgrounds and industry stakeholders that collect revenue from the industry. However, the state’s industry has challenges, particularly with people who support the industry on the labor front, including wage disparity, housing costs and the seasonal nature of employment.

Great promise in winter tourism

With the arrival of the 2025 ski and snowboarding season – two of Idaho’s premier ski resorts -Bogus Basin and Sun Valley, are both currently ranked top 10 nationally [1]. Other publications, annually, have more state ski destinations in their esteemed rankings. The state’s reputation for world-class skiing and snowboarding is a draw for stay-and-play winter sports enthusiasts visiting the state’s 18 ski resorts.

Idaho’s meteorologists earn 14% more than the national median

Every year on February 2, our nation’s esteemed animal meteorologist, Punxsutawney Phil, lets the country know if he predicts an early spring or six more weeks of winter.

Idaho’s December unemployment rate increases to 3.8%

– Idaho’s seasonally adjusted labor force over one million for first time –

Idaho’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.8% in December, up from 3.7% in November.

The state’s labor force increased by 4,108 people (0.4%) to 1,000,658 while the labor force participation rate — the percentage of people 16 years of age or older who are either employed or looking for work — increased from 63.4% to 63.6% between November and December.

This is the first time Idaho’s seasonally adjusted labor force has had over one million participants in the state’s history. Continue reading →

Labor economists will discuss the labor market outlook for 2025 in webinar, Jan. 28

The webinar topics include the state’s economic growth, inflation, population growth, labor market growth and more. These topics will be covered more in-depth in additional webinars during 2025. The team will also be discussing research projects that will be released this year.

National Bagel Day: Idaho bakers’ wages and employment on the rise

Today, bagel lovers rise to the occasion to celebrate National Bagel Day. This annual celebration is only possible due to the tireless efforts of bakers (Standard Occupational Code of 51-3011).

In Idaho, the median wages and employment for bakers have been on a roll in recent years. In 2023, the median hourly wage for this job was $15.34 — an increase of 31.1% from $11.70 in 2018. Similarly, estimated employment was 1,330 in 2023 — up from 900 in 2018. Continue reading →

Although the operator of the proposed facility has not been announced yet, the traffic impact study for the project indicates a 25,500 square foot facility which would employ roughly 150 people.
