Idaho still experiencing a slight downward trend in workplace fatalities

Idaho reported 39 work fatalities in 2022, nine more deaths than in 2021, or a 30% increase. While this is a significant increase from 2021, Idaho is still experiencing a slight downward trend (Figure 1) in workplace fatalities according to the state’s most recent Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) report.

The annual CFOI report presents data regarding all work incidents that caused a significant injury leading to the death of a worker. It does not include illnesses or preexisting conditions that caused a worker to die without an injury, such as COVID or a heart attack. Continue reading →

Labor demand in northern Idaho remains robust, with elevated levels of unfilled jobs. In total, there were 1,305 job postings in December of 2023, according to data from the Conference Board, of which 1,064 were posted in Kootenai County. Registered nurses and retail salespeople were the most in-demand occupation.

Labor economists expect Idaho job growth to increase annually through 2025

Idaho is expected to continue its trend of job creation, reaching total employment of nearly 900,000 in 2025, according to new short-term projections from the Idaho Department of Labor. The new projections (which cover the 2023-2025 period) come against a backdrop of great economic strength in the state, which has consistently created jobs and maintained a low level of unemployment despite national economic turbulence like inflation and rising interest rates. Idaho’s annual projected employment growth rate of 1.2% signals the state’s labor market is expected to remain strong in the coming year.

Local communities can apply for AmeriCorps grants

Idaho organizations interested in operating an AmeriCorps program can earn up to $75,000 in grant funds. Eligible organizations include nonprofits; educational, community and faith-based organizations; Indian tribes and local governments.

Those interested have until Feb. 2 to submit an intent to apply form for federal funding through AmeriCorps.

Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, and AmeriCorps provide funding for disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, veterans and military families. Continue reading →

Idaho’s December unemployment rate remains at 3.3%

Idaho’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged between November and December, remaining at 3.3%.

The state’s labor force increased by 1,616 people (0.2%) to 975,560.

Idaho’s labor force participation rate – the percentage of people 16 years of age or older who are either employed or looking for work – decreased from November’s 62.5% to 62.4% in December.

Total employment increased by 1,178 (0.1%) to 942,919 as unemployment increased by 438 (1.4%) to 32,641.

Why did I get a 1099-G tax form from the Idaho Department of Labor?

A 1099-G form is a summary of your unemployment insurance benefit payments. You were mailed this form if you collected or repaid benefits the prior year. The 1099-G form shows you the total taxable amount on the benefits you were paid in that calendar year.

Are unemployment insurance benefits taxable?

Yes, unemployment insurance benefits are taxable. Benefit payments are reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Can I access my 1099-G information online?

Yes. Your IRS 1099-G information will be available online by Jan. 31 at labor.idaho.gov/ClaimantPortal.

To view your Form 1099-G:

  1. Sign into your account with ID.me. This is a secure identity verification process that makes sure you’re you. Everyone who files for unemployment benefits online must log in with ID.me.
  2. Click on the HISTORY tab.
  3. Click the Details link in the 1099-G reporting tile.
  4. Open the 1099-G Doc link for the year.

Over 150 jobs available at Labor’s Post Falls hiring event, Jan. 17

The Idaho Department of Labor is hosting a hiring event in Post Falls on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This event takes place at the department’s Post Falls local office, located at 600 N. Thornton St.

While over 1,000 job openings are currently listed in Kootenai County, Labor Economist Sam Wolkenhauer shared the top five industries looking for workers include administrative and support services; hospitals; ambulatory healthcare services; food services and drinking places; and insurance carriers and related activities. Healthcare Career Event set for Jan. 17 in Lewiston

Statewide, the demand for healthcare jobs is increasing while local healthcare companies continue to struggle with staffing levels to meet the demand for services.

Idaho healthcare and social service jobs have increased by 7,800 (7.3%) over the past year. Statewide – department of Labor analysts conservatively project this industry to add another 4,500 jobs during 2024.
